Good morning everyone, dear judges, teachers, and  awesome fellow debaters!

My name is jane fang from basis bilingual school shenzhen, and today, as debater  I’m not here to “debate” with you—I’m here to gush about the thing that’s made me go from a “a kid who froze up and turn red when asked a question” to someone who can stand here and chat with all of you, and throw all the cross fire back confidently. That thing, of course, is debating.

People who don’t understand debate often say, “Debating is just arguing, i know you guys are always use debates as a reason for fight” all i can say is superficial! To me, debating is like painting a abstract image that although you know the resolution well, every round for you is a new paint, because not only you are painting this,  but your parter, and your opponent, and also the judges. Even though I’m not good at art neither for 2d or 3d, i still can say the all of the debate round I completed would  be the best images  i paint in my life.

I think every one might have heard about, the Butterfly Effect which state that A tiny initial change may trigger a chain reaction in a complex system, ultimately leading to a huge difference in outcomes. What i mean by that is  When doing every debate round every small words you say matters, and every evidence you research  matters, and every flow you made on the scarch paper matters! Debate matters! And of course find your position in a global topic matters!

Sometimes we are exploring the pros and cons of sustainable develop goal, sometimes we are digging into whether autonomous vehicle should be prioritized  or not. Maybe even back to the arctic extraction discussion, I still find myself remember the methane under the permafrost will be release even without the extraction. All i mean by that is debate It’s not about winning the competition or showing off personal skills, it’s about a process where we make link to the topic and really aware and care about it, finally building our well rounded knowledge of the world.

I still remember i was been called as an illiteracy by my debate coach, because at that time i know nothing about the world. I couldn’t even call myself a nerd because my gpa was not high enough. But after debating and professional training, i know there are a lot of things i never imagined or thought about before, like a fish that lived in a tank suddenly pour into the ocean. Now i would say it’s my pleasure and honor to join the debate community and have an incentive to dive into the ocean.

Debate have taught me a lot, and it is long enough to stand here all day talking about my gains as a debater. It’s the most colorful, passionate property in my life. I learned how to accept losses and understand there is  always only one winner for every round, i learned how to be respectful, i learned how to enjoy winning when applauds come. I learned how friendship can be developed among idea intersections. And  I learned no matter the result as long as you contribute your best to the round you can be the champion for yourself.

So, my fellow debaters, let’s let go of the fear of losing. Let’s laugh when we make a small mistake, cheer for a great argument and soak up every single moment of this day. The real prize isn’t the trophy and price —it’s the new things you’ll learn for your each round and the improvement you made in each sentence. I’m already super exciting to meet you guys during the round.

May today be full of great ideas, exciting clashes, and tons of happy surprises for all of us! Wish you a day as awesome and fruitful as a perfect debate speech! Thank you!
