Hello everyone, my name is Michelle, and I am a senior high school student from Huitong School. It is my honor to be here today to share a bit about my debate journey.
I started Public Forum debate in grade ten. What immediately drew me in was the idea of arguing with facts and logic instead of emotions—logos over pathos, as we say. PF debate values evidence and reasoning above all, and to me, that felt like the fairest way to explore any academic topic: after all, what is the point of discussion if we don’t learn to back up our ideas with reliable evidence? So, quite quickly, I fell in love with debate.

My first tournament was the 2023 WSDA Fall Regionals. For the first time, I truly understood the importance of research, of building logical arguments to defend my side, and of responding to those who disagree with my ideas professionally. That mix of nervousness and excitement completely captured me, and I knew right then that I wanted to keep going. Thus, I devoted much of my effort to debate. Over the next year, I won regional champion, national second place, and semifinalist at the Harvard International Debate competition.
Looking back, what I’ve learned from debate goes far beyond mere skills for competing. My school’s debate club created an environment where we see every tournament as a chance to practice and grow. I’ve learned to organize my thoughts, align my logic with my partner’s, and enjoy deep discussions with friends and mentors. Debate has given me endless new ways to understand knowledge and to approach different people. Meeting new friends and discussing debate tactics has always been something I looked forward to, because you never know what new cultural and intellectual perspectives these peers can introduce you to.

My critical thinking and research skills have improved tremendously as I examined one thoughtful resolution after the next, linking theories and new knowledge to real-world contexts to examine my environment with more sophistication. The charm of debate, I believe, lies in its ability to capture one’s interest and push them to think critically, objectively, and with autonomy. Debate has been one of my main activities in high school, and it played a huge role in helping me gain offers from the University of Oxford, UC Berkeley, and Hong Kong University.

I will never regret the time I've given to debate. It is a truly fulfilling activity that has given me opportunities beyond what words can describe. All in all, I wish all of you a wonderful experience today. Do your best, learn from every round, and good luck in the tournament!
