Coach Miecke's Speaking Corner

Verbal communication is everything we convey with our voice—what we say and how we say it. Our nonverbal side, on the other hand, consists of everything we don't say, but show, that still communicates meaning. Here, we look at our body, hands, face, and even our eyes. Surprisingly, nonverbal communication carries the most meaning. While you might think—especially in public speaking—that words are the most important part, listeners pick up far more from what you show. Psychological studies have proven that spoken words account for only about 35% of the meaning received, while nonverbal cues make up the remaining 65%. It is a crucial aspect of communication that many people overlook, yet it has a massive impact on how we speak.

Body

The way you stand during a speech matters. Many speakers tend to lean to one side, placing weight on a single leg, while others keep their legs glued together, leaving no space to move. To project confidence, stand with your feet hip-width apart and planted firmly on the floor. This provides a strong, balanced, and grounded base while making it easy to step or move around. Posture is equally critical; slouching diminishes your credibility and makes you look unprepared. Keep your shoulders back and imagine balancing a book on your head. While purposeful movement is allowed and can keep a speech engaging, avoid continuous, distracting pacing that detracts from your message.

Face

Facial expressions communicate volumes without a single word. Your face reveals whether you like something, feel upset, or are excited about your topic. To help the audience relate to you and understand your emotions, use your facial expressions intentionally. Showing your enthusiasm or concern builds a stronger connection, whereas a rigid, expressionless delivery detached from emotion distances you from the audience.

Hands

Hand gestures are a public speaking superpower, yet many misuse or hide them. Placing your hands behind your back can make you appear untrustworthy, nervous, or secretive. Avoid nervous habits like fidgeting with clothes or wringing your hands. Instead, keep your arms relaxed at your sides and use open gestures to emphasize points—such as counting on your fingers or illustrating size. Use pointing with caution, as it can feel aggressive if done incorrectly. Natural, light, and open hand movements enrich your delivery.

Eyes

Eye contact signals confidence and a desire to connect. Staring at your feet, ceiling, or off to the sides makes you look anxious or disengaged. Looking up when forgetting words is a clear tell to the audience that you lost your train of thought. If looking directly at people feels intimidating, look just above the audience's heads; from their perspective, it appears as though you are looking at them, while reducing your stress. Over time, aim to look directly into their eyes to harness the true power of stage presence.

Miecke
