(Personal Passion & Connection)
你必须与自己的主题建立真实的联系。
将个人经历融入演讲,并深入解释这些经历背后的意义,不仅能让内容更加鲜活,也更容易与听众建立情感共鸣。
2. 更广泛的现实意义(Broader Relevance)
优秀的演讲虽然往往始于个人经历或个人感悟,但绝不会止步于此。
你的演讲需要将这种个人热情延伸到更广阔的层面,与社会议题、群体处境、时代变化或公共挑战产生连接。
换句话说,你必须回答两个问题:
为什么别人要关心这个问题?
为什么裁判值得花时间听你讲述它?
当个人故事与社会价值相结合时,演讲才真正具备打动人心的力量。
Core Principle: Select a Theme You Are Genuinely Passionate About
One of the most exciting aspects of public speaking is that topics are not highly restrictive. It can range from technology, AI, and social media to agriculture, animal rights, environmental preservation, education, or even complex scientific theories like human cloning. There is no single "perfect" or "best" topic.
The golden rule is to avoid picking a topic solely because you think it's what the judges want to hear. Instead, choose a subject you genuinely interest you and are willing to invest time and energy into researching, understanding, and explaining.
In events like Original Oratory, judges are always looking for unique perspectives and original thinking. Your genuine passion for a topic will naturally boost your delivery, energy, and confidence, all of which contribute to a stronger performance. The strongest, most attractive speeches always balance two critical factors:
1. Personal Passion & Connection: You must be able to personally relate to your topic. Incorporating personal experiences and explaining your examples thoroughly helps create an authentic, emotional connection with the audience.
2. Broader Relevance: While a speech may begin with a personal spark, it must bridge that individual passion to a broader audience. It should connect to something larger than yourself—relating to broader issues, communities, generations, or societal challenges. You must answer: Why should society care, and why should the judges listen?
PART 2
冠军演讲的黄金结构
01
The Hook
开场白
Swipe left for the English version
A hook is a creative, engaging opening designed to make people want to listen.
There are some effective ways to create a hook:
Asking a thought-provoking question
Sharing an interesting fact
Presenting a surprising statistic
Using lyrics from a song or a line from a poem
Introducing a powerful quotation
One of the most effective approaches, however, is telling a personal story. A descriptive story allows the audience to put themselves in your shoes and creates an emotional connection. The story should be relevant to your topic and naturally lead into your thesis statement or central message.
For example, instead of saying "I don't like homework," describe the vivid scene: *"Every single night, I am hunched over my desk at midnight, so exhausted that I can barely keep my eyes open."* This helps the audience relate to your emotions and perspective immediately.
02
The Thesis Statement
核心论点
Swipe left for the English version
有了开场白之后,你需要一个强有力、清晰且直接的句子,明确交代你的演讲主题。请记住,虽然这个演讲你可能已经练习了几个月,但裁判是第一次听。你必须明确阐明你的核心信息和独特立场,而不是在还没定义问题时就直接切入各种数据和事实。
Following the hook, you need a single sentence that is strong, clear, and direct about exactly what your speech is about. Remember, while you have been practicing this speech for months, your audience and judges are hearing it for the very first time. You must explicitly state your core message and unique perspective rather than diving straight into facts and statistics without defining the actual problem.
03
The Outline
大纲
Swipe left for the English version
大纲用以预览接下来的内容走向。为裁判提供一个清晰的路线图,这能极大地增强演讲的条理性、组织和结构清晰度。
The outline previews what the audience should expect and maps out where the speech is headed. Presenting this brief roadmap provides your judges with a clear guide, which significantly enhances the organizational clarity and overall structure of your speech.
04
The Body Paragraphs
正文段落
Swipe left for the English version
这是演讲篇幅最大的部分(约占85%的时间)。
原创演讲须遵循“原因、影响、解决方案”的骨架。原因部分解释问题源于何处,影响阐明其负面后果,解决方案则给出具体的应对步骤,避免让听众因面对一个无法解决的庞大问题而感到泄气。
This represents the largest portion of your speech (approximately 85% of the time). For Original Oratory, we follow a "Cause, Effect, and Solution" model. The cause explains why the problem exists; the effect details why the issue matters and its broader consequences; the solution outlines concrete steps to fix it so the audience doesn't leave feeling demotivated by an unfixable problem.
05
The Conclusion & Call to Action
结论与行动呼吁
Swipe left for the English version
结论部分需要对整场演讲进行总结和升华,清晰地重申你的核心观点与最终立场。
同时,务必加入明确的行动号召,鼓励听众将演讲中的思考转化为实际行动,从听众变成行动者。
最后,以一句有记忆点的结束语收尾,并巧妙呼应引言中的内容,形成首尾呼应的圆环式结构,为演讲画上有力的句号。
The conclusion serves to unify everything in a definitive final stand. Crucially, it must feature a "call to action" to transform passive listeners into active participants, motivating them to take that critical first step when they leave the auditorium. Finally, end with a memorable closing statement that loops back to your introduction, creating a cohesive, circular structure.

Question ①: Is it necessary to use fancy vocabulary?
Use words that you understand.
When communicating with an audience, it is important that you fully understand the words you are using and can explain your ideas clearly. While expanding your vocabulary is an excellent way to improve your communication skills, simply using bigger or more complex words will not automatically earn extra points. Overly advanced vocabulary can sometimes weaken a speech if it feels unnatural or disconnected from the speaker's understanding. Instead, focus on developing your knowledge and understanding of the topic. As your understanding grows, your vocabulary will naturally develop alongside it.
Strong speakers do not use complicated words to impress people; they use the right words to communicate their ideas effectively.
问题②:引用证据以增强可信度重要吗?
是的,绝对重要。提及来源有助于让听众相信你的信息是有效且值得信赖的。即使你没有提供完整的学术引用,说明信息的出处也能增强你论点的可信度。
例如,你可以通过这样说来引用专家的资质:“根据专门研究青少年发育的心理学家史密斯博士的说法……”你也可以引用一项研究、一篇文章、一份报告或一个机构。任何能够证明你证据可靠性的信息,都有助于强化你试图阐明的观点。
Question ②:Is it important to cite evidence so it is more credible?
Yes, definitely. Referring to sources helps your audience believe that your information is valid and trustworthy. Even if you do not provide a full academic citation, mentioning where the information comes from adds credibility to your argument.
For example, you could reference the qualifications of an expert by saying, “According to Dr. Smith, a psychologist specializing in adolescent development…” You could also refer to a study, article, report, or organization. Any information that demonstrates the reliability of your evidence helps strengthen the point you are trying to make.
Question ③:How do you add humor when talking about serious topics?
This is an important question because if everything in a speech is serious, it can become overwhelming for the audience and may cause them to disengage.
One way to lighten the mood is by referring to positive moments or memories. Personal stories and examples can also help provide balance and make the speech feel more relatable. Appropriate jokes can be effective as long as they are respectful and connected to the topic.
Another useful technique is varying your tone. Shifting between serious, reflective, and lighter moments can break the intensity and make the presentation more engaging for listeners.
Question ④:My speech is usually mainly a story with a moral at the end. Is this a problem, and how can I improve it?
Original Oratory is an argumentative speech event where the speaker presents a specific issue, develops a clear position, and persuades the audience through reasoning, evidence, and analysis.
While stories can still play an important role, they are typically used as examples or evidence to support larger arguments. Personal stories are often particularly effective because they help build audience connection and credibility. However, the overall structure should follow a more formal persuasive format rather than relying solely on a narrative and moral lesson.
