这正是2026 WSDA全国赛 Junior 即兴辩论赛备稿辩题第一轮的核心议题:“The benefits of a Cashless Society outweigh the harms.”(无现金社会利大于弊)

Resolved:The benefits of a Cashless Society outweigh the harms.

无现金社会利大于弊

「Key Terms」

This topic is a dream for young students. Kids see parents tap phones to pay, watch commercials for payment apps, and sometimes handle physical money themselves. They are not debating abstract economics—they are debating their daily lives.

Second, it is visually clear. The "pros" are easy: speed, convenience, no lost coins, easy tracking. The "cons" are equally simple: privacy concerns, what if technology fails, what about people without bank accounts? Every child can picture waiting in line while someone fumbles for exact change versus a quick tap-and-go.

Third, it teaches empathy and perspective. Young debaters must consider not just themselves, but elderly grandparents, homeless people, and small business owners. This topic naturally pushes students to think about fairness, inclusion, and real-world consequences.

Pro Side

01

Speed and Convenience

Digital payments take seconds. No counting coins, no waiting for change, no fumbling with wallets. Lines move faster at stores, restaurants, and public transport. Tap and go saves time every single day for everyone.

02

Safety and Security

Carrying cash is risky. It can be lost, stolen, or destroyed in a fire. Digital money is protected by passwords, fingerprints, and encryption. Banks can freeze accounts if fraud is suspected. You cannot get stolen cash back—but you can recover digital funds.

03

Transparency and Tracking

Digital payments leave a clear record. This helps families budget, businesses manage taxes, and governments reduce crime. Illegal activities like selling stolen goods are harder when every transaction leaves a digital footprint. Honest people benefit from a system that is fair and traceable. No more "I lost the receipt" arguments.

Con Side

01

Exclusion of Vulnerable Groups

Millions of people lack bank accounts or smartphones—including the elderly, the homeless, and low-income families. Going cashless leaves them behind. They cannot pay for food, medicine, or bus fare. A society that excludes its most vulnerable members is not fair or just.

02

Privacy Is Lost

Every digital payment leaves a trail. Banks, corporations, and governments can track what you buy, where you go, and when you spend. Cash is anonymous. It offers freedom and privacy that digital money cannot. Not everyone wants their shopping habits monitored.

03

System Failures Are Dangerous

Technology is not perfect. Power outages, server crashes, and cyber-attacks can freeze entire payment systems. If cards and phones stop working, people cannot buy essentials like groceries or gasoline. Cash works anytime, anywhere—no battery, internet, or electricity required. It is a reliable backup when systems fail.

Conclusion

This debate will be won by the team that has the best understanding of weight mechanisms, or ‘how to compare different impacts’. While I believe the Pro is much easier in this debate in terms of argumentation breadth, the Con actually has access to more dramatic impacts with less critical thought required. There are equally impressive impacts on the Pro, but you have to look much harder. As a result, this is a great topic for demonstrating true debating skill. Whoever can master weighing their arguments strategically will always win the debate.
