而在本次WSDA全国赛Junior 即兴辩论第二轮备稿辩题的比赛中,学生将通过辩题:“Artificial intelligence will create more jobs than it removes”讨论人工智能与未来工作的关系。

Resolved : Artificial intelligence will create more jobs than it removes.

人工智能创造的就业岗位将多于其取代的就业岗位。

「Key Terms」

This debate topic is a goldmine for elementary school debaters. It checks every box: it is relevant, balanced, research-friendly, and deeply engaging for young minds.

It Connects to Their World Kids today grow up with AI.

They use chatbots for homework, see robots in movies, and hear adults worry about automation. This topic lets them debate something that actually affects their future. It makes them feel like experts because they already have firsthand experience with technology. When students care about a topic, they argue better, listen harder, and remember more.

A great debate topic must have strong arguments on both sides—and this one does. On the Pro side, students can point to history: the internet and computers created millions of new jobs no one predicted. They can argue that AI will need human teachers, fixers, and overseers. On the negative side, they can argue that AI replaces routine tasks faster than new jobs appear, and that robots don't get tired or ask for raises. Because neither side has a clear "right" answer, every round is competitive and exciting.

This topic forces students to think beyond simple answers. They must compare short-term vs. long-term effects. They must define what counts as a "job". They must use evidence, not just opinions. These are exactly the thinking skills we want young students to develop.

Finally, this topic teaches students that technology is not good or bad—it is what we make of it. They learn to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and imagine different futures. These are skills that will serve them well beyond the debate room, whether they become scientists, teachers, or CEOs.

Pro Side

1

History Repeats Itself

Every major technological revolution—from the steam engine to the internet—destroyed old jobs but created entirely new industries nobody could have imagined. AI will follow the same pattern. Who predicted "social media manager" or "app developer" in 1990? Future jobs like "AI ethicist" or "digital recovery specialist" don't exist yet, but they will.

2

AI Needs Human Helpers

AI is powerful, but it is not perfect. It makes mistakes, shows bias, and lacks common sense. Humans must train it, check it, fix it, and explain it to others. This creates an entire ecosystem of new roles: data labelers, prompt engineers, bias auditors, and AI trainers. These jobs didn't exist five years ago, and they are growing fast.

3

Cheaper Services Mean More Demand

When AI makes businesses more efficient, prices drop. Cheaper goods and services mean more people can buy them. When demand grows, companies expand and hire more humans to handle the extra work. Think of banks: ATMs reduced teller jobs at first, but banks opened more branches because they were cheaper to run, and they hired more tellers overall.

Con Side

1

Speed of Change Is Unprecedented

Unlike the steam engine or internet, AI improves at lightning speed. It learns, adapts, and replaces tasks in months, not decades. Past technologies gave workers time to retrain. AI will not. Whole industries—customer service, translation, data entry—are already shrinking faster than new jobs appear.

2

AI Replaces Knowledge Work, Not Just Labor

Previous machines replaced muscles. AI replaces brains. It writes reports, analyzes data, and even creates art. If AI can do what a college graduate does, where will those graduates go? Middle-class office jobs are at greater risk than factory jobs ever were.

3

The New Jobs Aren't Enough

Yes, AI creates some new jobs—but they require advanced skills most workers don't have. A cashier cannot become an AI engineer overnight. The numbers don't add up: AI may create one million new roles, but it will eliminate four million routine jobs. The gap is simply too wide to bridge.

Conclusion

This debate will be won by the team that has the deepest understanding on what a ‘job’ actually is, both in society at large and economically, specifically. While the unique flashy AI evidence will certainly make the debate entertaining and provide lots of great research opportunities, ultimately the debaters who ask themselves the hardest questions about the purpose of ‘work’ will win this debate.
