Good morning everyone! My name is Jason, I am thrilled to be here today to share my debate journey with you.
I started my debate journey 2 years ago. At the beginning, I didn’t really like it nor enjoy it! I took part in some basic training in Hong Kong with a few of my friends and then tried participating in my first ever debate competition in my life, that is the Impromptu Debate Competition in Shenzhen. Without proper training and debate experiences, I lost and didn’t get any prize as it was my first time participating so it was expected.

I lost a couple times and started to get very mad at myself and kept thinking why I couldn’t improve, and to realize that the debate training that I took part in was WSD which is a different debate format compared with Impromptu Debate. The rules and judging criteria are totally different as well!
Driven by the strong desire to win, I sacrificed my leisure time for 10 weekends, going all the way from Hong Kong to Shenzhen attending the Impromptu Debate training. The training was really helpful in that I had my skills uplifted, understood how to do cross fire, final focus and how to impress the judges in an effective way.
The third time I competed in the impromptu debate competition, I won the first prize! I felt amazed and ecstatic when my name got announced. The beautiful thing about debating was not about what prize I got, it’s really about the experience, learning, fun and excitement you have there. I also realized myself becoming more confident and could act quite aggressively on my rebuttal which eventually led me to win more competitions.

As I got better and better I became more motivated towards debating. I started to do WSD and other types of debate competitions. In those debate competitions I met new friends who later became my debate partners. Together we won competitions too! Then I became more passionate about debating and really enjoyed it the most! Whenever I had a chance to work on any prepared motions, I worked as hard as possible to make myself fully prepared.
Now, I believe everyone can be a great debater as long as you keep learning, working hard and enjoy every moment of debating!
Good luck to everyone and always remember, never give up!
